Born in Brooklyn and reared on the “Northshore” of Massachusetts, Brian Brogan is a internationally recognized shamanic artist. A world traveler who has lived in 7 different countries, he now lives in the west of Ireland with his artist wife Jessie Brogan. For Brian, discovering the act of creating poetry was both an epiphany and a revelation in his quest to combine his painting and shamanic interactions with nature.
Brian writes, “In both my poetry and art much of my imagery is dreamlike, and comes to me in dreams, visions, and other liminal states of consciousness where the material world meets the spirit world. I am attracted to dreamlike places where tropes merge, meanings shift, and past, present, and future fuse. At these junctures space can become time, and time can turn into space. Within my poetry are alchemical narratives that resurrect presences, light and hope inside the insistent paradox of the human condition.”
Brian states “I feel a deep kinship with Gary Snyder’s words”:
“As a poet I hold the most archaic values on earth . . . the fertility of the soil, the magic of animals, the power-vision in solitude, the terrifying initiation and rebirth, the love and ecstasy of the dance, the common work of the tribe. I try to hold both history and the wilderness in mind, that my poems may approach the true measure of things and stand against the unbalance and ignorance of our times.”
Brian is currently working on his manuscript “Tracking The Masked Dawn” for publication

EXTRACTION FROM AN INTERVIEW
“By my mid twenties a big shift started to occur. I found poetry and it found me. A rocket went off inside me. I went on a massive track of reading literature and poetry, and began writing poetry. (I had previously written my musings for two years aboard a ship.) Reading poets, Campbell, Jung, Hillman, and mystics etc… was akin to listening to my first mentors..finally! They had a profound influence on me. I started subconscious stream writing that I continue today, but I consider it a spirit stream now due to my healing and development- what I embody today… My poetry comes from that flow and amalgamation of the inner and outer spirit. At this point in my life I prioritized my life in a quest for spiritual awakening and healing. There was allot inside just waiting to come out – when I stepped fully into aspects of my spiritual seeking I was greatly accelerated along my path. It was only very recently, after so many years of dedication to following this path that quite unexpectedly, an internationally respected Mayan Curandera told me I was born to be a powerful medicine person – through her astrology reading. So I guess our Destiny comes forward to greet us even as we are seeking…
I lived in the Far East for 5 years which influenced my philosophy. My destiny seemed unusually layed out before me. Dr. Richard Tan (Tiawanese) (now deceased) taught me Spontaneous Qi Gong and Feng Shui. Grand Master Le-Tian (Chinese) also taught me Spontaneous Qi Gong and Energy Healing with Qi. To accomplish his healing energy method you had to be able to physically move a person from a distance. I went to a Feng Shui School, and on my first day I was surprised and happy that they were honoring Dr. Tan as the lineage holder. Spontaneous Qi Gong is not well known or practiced. It’s more an initiation, a transmission of energy from a master, and then the student is meant to cultivate that energy into a “self-emitting” energy – creating a natural flow on their own.
Spontaneous, formless, one clears the mind and the energy ignites on its own, you let the body move and be dictated to by the direction the energy wants to take. At the base level it is a meditation in movement – great for mind and body. Ultimately it becomes your spiritual connection to the infinite universal energies. I was lucky to not only receive these initiatory teachings, but got to know my teachers personally who I have allot of respect for. It’s been over 20 years now since my beginnings with Spontaneous Gong and I have been a disciplined and devoted practitioner since. It’s the energy that courses through my shamanic healing and art. They say this was the original Qi Gong, pre history, of shamanic origins…..
This is the base of where I came from on the spiritual path before stepping fully in Shamanism. As I work with the drum; rattle, engage in ritual prayer, energy healing, clearing and holding space, commune with the spirit world in these various mediums… this energy courses through me and the space, it connects to spirit and conveys healing, and guidance/information.
Before beginning my formal shamanic training with teacher Ann Drake (Initiated in Borneo with a spirit infusion by a tribal shaman.) I was instructed by spirit to get a drum made specifically for me by a traditional Mohawk woman I came to know, and had teachings from. In the midst of using the drum I found myself in a new language with the spirit world that I would develop over time. Those days I would take any opportunity I could get to visit reservations for traditional teachings from elders, the simple, but deep teachings of Native Americans appealed to my own ways of being in the world. I have found no better teachers for generosity of spirit. It is the same with so many other indigenous people around the world. I spent some time with the New England Native American Cultural Center, Mayans, the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers and other gatherings of indigenous peoples around the world. The peoples still in their traditions in close relationship to the earth, I have a deep affinity towards. Being in ceremony with their teachings is a privilege..
My first shamanic journey with a shaman was as powerful as anything I have ever encountered, and the second session and so on… That familiar energy and spirit that flows through all comes through my painting, my art, which started around the same time as my shamanic work. Over the years handfuls of people have experienced dreams and visions in relationship to my paintings – so they now contribute to the sacred shamanic arts/crafts around the world, acting as shamanic healing tools; or as artifacts for expanding consciousness, also they can act in a similar way as a Feng Shui piece, heightening the energy of a space.
It’s been a road less traveled – I have traveled for most of my life, and moved to Ireland a few years ago. I have picked up my healing and guidance role again after transitioning here, emigrating from the states. That’s a story in itself. I ended up in Ireland by way of calling on the ancestors and marrying a traditional Fey Seer. It’s a strange life, the deeper you go into spirit the more curious it becomes. So yes if you’re wondering who this guy is who you might go to a healing with… Well that’s my shortest of stories from a long version.”

“Nietzsche was the one who did the job for me. At a certain moment in his life, the idea came to him of what he called ‘the love of your fate.’ Whatever your fate is, whatever the hell happens, you say, ‘This is what I need.’ It may look like a wreck, but go at it as though it were an opportunity, a challenge. If you bring love to that moment—not discouragement—you will find the strength is there.”
